Women's Council of Entrepreneurs had the honor of interviewing the woman behind Galan Graphix, Myrna Galan. Learn all about Myrna, the setbacks she faced at a young age, what she is most proud of, and how making the decision to start her own business was the best thing she has ever done.
Tell us a little bit about your business and what you do
I'm a Graphic Designer, I create graphics for businesses to promote their services or products. I design a polished, professional brand for Business Owners. We provide client-focused design solutions to clients all over the country. We focus on creating concepts tailored to each client. Our ultimate goal is to produce results, turn client ideas into reality, and build long-term relationships.
How or why did you decide to start your own business?
I started my own business on March 26, 2009. It was the day I quit my job. There had been an issue over a project ad I was yelled at for something that was out of my control. I decided I didn’t have to put up with that type of behavior and I quit! I never looked back, the best decision of my life.
Tell us about you- the business owner/owners so we can get to know you personally
I’m a native Texan, born and raised in Houston, I now live in San Antonio with my husband. I have always loved to draw and create and it translated to commercial art (graphic design). I still love what I do after almost 28 years. I still get excited to see a project I designed or a logo I design on a sign as I drive around the city. I have 2 adult step sons and a granddaughter and 4 cats.
Why did you choose this business or industry?
I have been drawing since pre-school days and I learned about Graphic Design in high school. I was almost a beautician and I ended up needing an elective credit to graduate high school and ART fell back in my lap. Changed my whole life career.
Did you have any major setbacks or obstacles getting started?
When I graduated from high school, I remember telling my parents that I wanted to go to college. They told me that they had not saved any money for me or my sister to go to college. I was devastated because I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I spoke to the people at the Art Institute of Houston and they told me about grants and scholarships available for minorities. I applied to anything and everything! I got several grants and scholarships and had very little debt when I graduated. I always tell everyone “where there is a will, there is a way!”
What differentiates your business from your competition?
Galan Graphix is a design firm that prides ourselves on value, quality, and execution. We provide each client large design firm quality work.
What are you most proud of about your business?
I have been in business, full-time, for over 12 years. I’m proud of that because it is a struggle and I have survived longer than the statistics said I would. I’m stubborn and refuse to give up!
How has your industry changed in the last few months and how do you see it changing in the future (or will it)?
For my business, I had a lot of clients only needing digital graphics to promote online courses or e-book. This past month I had a lot more projects for print.
